Huawei on Thursday launched Honor 7i, smartphone with rotating camera and high-end hardware. The phone, which initially is going to be available only in China, has a 13MP rear camera that can be rotated and positioned as a front camera. What this means for consumers is that they would be able to click selfies with the rear camera, which has better hardware compared to front cameras.
Huawei is not the first company to put this feature in a smartphone. Oppo, another Chinese company and a competitor to Huawei, had launched a phone that had similar camera.
In terms of hardware, the Honor 7i looks like a mid-range phone. It has a 5.2-inch screen with 1080p resolution. It is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 616 processor, which is a minor update to the Snapdragon 615, and has a 3100 mAh battery.
The phone will come in two variants. The model with 16GB internal storage will have 2GB RAM and is likely to cost around $250. The other model, which will have 32GB internal storage and 3GB RAM, would slightly more.
The phone also features a fingerprint scanner. Huawei has said that the Honor 7i has a shell made of metal and that it is among the sleeker phones in the market.
With more and more people looking for smartphones with good front cameras blame selfie craze for it device manufacturers have started improving the overall experience. While some manufactures like Samsung are putting improved front camera complete with better image sensors and lenses in their devices like the Galaxy S6, manufacturers like Oppo and Huawei are trying to blur the distinction between front and rear camera through rotating camera modules.
Huawei has said that the rotating camera module in the Honor 7i has been specifically designed and that it can withstand over 100 rotating motions for two years without showing any signs of wear and tear.
