Microsoft has been fairly silent on the phone front in the last six odd months. The company has launched a few phones but in the mainstream market. We haven't heard much about the company's flagship Lumia phones. That is going to change. Ahead of the expected launch in October, the images of the Microsoft Lumia 950 and the Lumia 950 XL have been leaked on the web.
The two phones codenamed Cityman and Talkman seems to follow the signature Lumia design with rounded edges and polycarbonate body. The Cityman is going to be called Lumia 950 in the market. According to The Verge and other websites that have leaked the information, the Lumia 950 would have a 5.2-inch screen with a resolution of 1440x2560 pixels. It is expected that the phone would have following hardware and features:
- Matte White or black polycarbonate body
- 5.2 inch WQHD (1440x2560) OLED display
- Snapdragon 808, 64-bit Hexa core
- Iris scanner (infrared) for Windows Hello
- 3GB of RAM
- 32GB of internal storage with a microSD card slot
- 20MP PureView rear camera
- 5MP Wide-angle front facing camera
- 3000 mAh removable battery
- Qi wireless charging with flip cover
- USB Type-C
The Talkman, meanwhile, will have a 5.7-inch screen. The Lumia 950 XL will have the following specifications and hardware.
- Matte White or black polycarbonate body
- 5.7 inch WQHD (1440x2560) OLED display
- Snapdragon 810, 64-bit Octa core
- Iris scanner (infrared) for Windows Hello
- 3GB of RAM
- 32GB of internal storage with a microSD card slot
- 20MP PureView rear camera with triple LED flash
- 1mm silver ring inside the circumference of the black camera pod
- Aluminum side buttons
- 5MP Wide-angle front facing camera
- 3300 mAh removable battery
- Qi wireless charging integrated
- USB Type-C
The two phones will be powered by the mobile version of the Windows 10. Unlike in the past when Microsoft was hoping to make the Windows Phone a dominant force in the market, the company has now curtailed its ambitions in the face of Android and iOS.
Recently Vineet Durani, Microsoft's head for Windows division in India, told that the company would focus on fewer phone models. Instead of flooding market with Windows Phone devices, it would create specific devices that would offer specific experiences. For example, in the high-end market it may offer one device that would appeal to power users. At the same time, it may come up with a mobile that would be targeted only at enterprise customers.
The same point was highlighted by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella in a recent email to employees. "In the near term, we will run a more effective phone portfolio, with better products and speed to market given the recently formed Windows and Devices Group. We plan to narrow our focus to three customer segments where we can make unique contributions and where we can differentiate through the combination of our hardware and software. We'll bring business customers the best management, security and productivity experiences they need; value phone buyers the communications services they want; and Windows fans the flagship devices they'll love," he had written.
