WhatsApp has updated its Android app with new features including custom notifications, the ability to mark chats as unread or read, support for new languages and the middle finger emoji . The updated app (version 2.12.250) that was earlier available on the company's official website has now made its way to the Google Play store.
Among new features and improvements, the key highlight is the ability to mute even individual contacts - a feature that was earlier limited to only groups. To mute any contact on your WhatsApp, go to that particular contact, tap on the icon with three dots in the app's top right corner, and tap "View contact". Scroll down a little to find the mute option and simply toggle to enable the feature.
Also there is a "Custom notifications" option right above the mute feature. It lets you customize notification tone, vibrate settings, pop up notifications, and the light colour for individual contacts.
The ability to "Mark as unread" feature has been available to iOS users for quite sometime, but is now available for Android as well. Simply tap and hold on any WhatsApp contact brings you some options, and the last of them is "Mark as unread". Once selected, you will see a thick green dot against that contact. It acts as a reminder for messages from contacts that have been marked "as unread". One you tap on that contact to read messages, the green dot goes away.
The much-discussed middle finger emoji has also found a place in the WhatsApp emoji tray. The middle finger emoji in WhatsApp is racially diverse and has been placed next to the Vulcan Salute emoji.
You can also tap and hold on it to choose a different colour.
Users can also lower the data usage used during WhatsApp calls. The feature is hidden under "Chats and calls in Settings.
Sending messages to contacts that have been shared by someone on WhatsApp has become even easier. When receiving a contact card, you can now quickly message to that person right from there - but only if he is on WhatsApp.
Also, the company has added support for two new languages - Urdu and Bengali.
