Amazon is planning to release a watered down version of its Fire HD 6 tablet at half the price, according to a report on the Wall Street Journal.
The WSJ report didn't give much details about what the $50 tablet would pack in except that it would include a mono speaker and to keep the costs down, the Seattle based retailer and tech company had "outsourced much of the development to overseas firms including Shanghai Huaqin Telecom Technology and Taiwan's Compal Communications."
Now a set of specifications have surfaced on a benchmark database and it indicates how Amazon plans to keep the pricing so low.
The cheaper Fire tablet will have a resolution of 1024x600 on a 6.7-inch panel and Amazon has chosen a quad-core MediaTek 1.3GHz processor. The tablet, according to the leaked specs, will have a 2 megapixel rear and a 0.3 megapixel front camera along with 1 GB of RAM. The specs also mention that the tablet would run on Android 5.1.
Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos had set an internal goal a $50 price tag for both the Fire tablet and Kindle e-reader, says WSJ. While the prices of e-reader screen technology kept the price of the cheapest Kindle at $79, the new Fire tablet might meet the pricing goal.
