New companies are entering the Indian smartphone market almost daily. After Xiaomi and Obi Mobiles, Finnish startup Jolla has announced that it will launch its first smartphone in India very soon. The company, which uses Sailfish OS in its phones, made the announcement on Twitter.
Jolla said the device would be exclusively sold via e-retailer Snapdeal.
Consumers can sign-up on Jolla's website ahead of the phone's launch. The company will notify the people who sign-up via an email once the phone is available in India.
Jolla was formed by former Nokia employees who worked on the MeeGo OS and the Nokia N9. The work that these employees did on the MeeGo and the N9 serves as the base for the Sailfish OS. For example, the OS uses swipe-based interface that is similar to the one in MeeGo. The interface is called Ambiance.
Sailfish will support QT apps as well as over 85,000 Android apps.
The upcoming Jolla phone looks like a budget device. It has a dual-core 1.4GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 1GB RAM, a 4.5-inch qHD display, a 8MP rear camera, a 2MP front camera and a 2,100mAh battery. It has 16GB internal memory.
